I can't get that damn song out of my head... I sing it every time he rocks the party (which, lately, has been a lot).

But first, let me offer my condolences to D Wright -- I'm sorry you didn't make it to the All-Star Game (I did everything I could; seriously, I voted until my eyes crossed typing those damn code numbers in) but at least you are a.) not going to screw up your swing again at the home-run derby and b.) going to get a few days' rest. Yay for you.

I love all the excitement around the games lately... I enjoy looking forward to games again. Today at lunch I went to ESPN Zone to watch the first hour or so of the game (it was perfect -- our game on one huge screen; Phils/Cards on the other) and then watched the rest in my office (yes, I love my job). As much as I like having day games to watch during work, it makes for a long evening. Fortunately, I was able to see the Pirates take care of the Yankees -- the next best thing to watching the Mets win is watching the Yankees lose, yes?

And gee, Moises, we never saw this coming, did we? Actually, I'm glad we have a final answer. Collect your things and go. Thanks. We appreciated you when you could play, we loved the hitting streak last year, we enjoyed your crazy batting stance. But. Your time is up. And I think we're going to be ok without you. Somehow we'll muddle through.

OK, now I have to figure out how to kidnap my nephew to bring him to Build-A-Bear Workshop day on Saturday. I'm just afraid my brother would notice if he was missing. Damn.

The past couple weeks have been crazy for me, and also? I just felt like everything there was to be said about the Willie firing, etc. had been said. By people far more eloquent than I.

So now here we are... a few games closer to Philly. There's a part of me that thinks maybe, just maybe there will be a reversal of fortune this year and the Phillies will collapse horrifically and we will rise to the top.

But there's another part of me that just has no faith at all. Friday pretty much summed it all up in the span of about 10 hours: kick the Yankees' collective asses in game 1.... a few hours later get spanked ourselves. How do you go from scoring 15 runs in one game to zero in the next? Zero. None. Nada. Zilch.

I will say that I am still optimistic about Jerry Manuel. I think he can do things Willie couldn't; reach the players in ways that weren't getting through before. After today's game, I saw him walking off the field with David Wright, and David had his arm around Jerry's shoulders and they were laughing about something. I can't picture that happening with Willie.

We'll see where things go. Maybe after the All-Star Break, they will all come back with guns a-blazin' ~~seeing as how none of them will likely be participating in the festivities.~~

Huh. So, I got (almost) everything I requested before I went away, and yet.... it doesn't make me as happy as I thought.

Ya think it has anything to do with HOW it was done? Yet again, they screw everything up.

They can't even FIRE someone the right way.

And over the weekend, as I thought about it (despite my best efforts to not think about them at all), I realized that Omar really does need to go, too.

Oh, and PS: Why is Howard Johnson still here?! I mean, I love him just as much as the next fan, but clearly the hitting is a huge issue. Though I completely agree that Rick Peterson had to go, why Nieto? What exactly was he doing wrong?

Maybe this shake-up will shake things up.

Fingers crossed.

OK folks, I'm outta here till Monday night.

I don't want to hear about, see or think about the Mets while I'm away. This weekend? It's all about the Toledo Mud Hens!!!

But. By the time I return, I want all of you gone.

And by "you" I mean: Peterson, Johnson and Randolph. And frankly, Minaya too. At this point, it doesn't even matter who is brought in to manage... it will probably be Manuel, to which I just say: whatever.

It can't get any worse, so bring it on.

I have nothing left to say.

I'd like to start a petition to have Mets games played like girls' softball games: 7 innings. Anyone in?

Today was my nephew (Benjamin) and his mom's (Nikki) first baseball game ever. Well, not so surprising for him; he'll be two in August. But my mom and I have recruited them (my brother, his wife and son) to become Mets fans... they watch whenever they can and Benjamin is mesmerized when he sees it on tv.

Not so much in person. There was just so much to climb on, so much to see. He sat for a little while, then wanted to explore. We rode the escalators, we climbed up and down steps, up and down seats. Great fun.

And oh, the food! He probably thought he was in heaven: ice cream, cookies, hot dogs, licorice, lollipops, and I think today was his first taste of Sprite.

All of this was a welcome distraction from what was happening on the field.

It's almost getting to the point of being comical; but I don't know too many people who are laughing.

Let me put it this way: if I hadn't seen the past few games and someone was telling me about them, I'd think they were lying. It couldn't really be that bad, right? They must be exaggerating!

And did you say the manager is still there? Really? Does he have compromising photos of the GM and/or owners or something? Interesting. I can't for the life of me think of a reason to keep him.

While I certainly understand that Willie's not the one out there pitching (or not) and hitting (or not), he is the one charged with rallying his troops and figuring out what the hell is wrong. And that? He's not doing. And if he is, they aren't responding to him.

I ran into a friend outside the stadium today, and he said if the Mets really had any balls, they'd bring in Wally Backman. I'm not a huge fan of his, but after today, I can see it. Polar opposite of what they have now. Granted, his opposite involves criminal charges, but still. Can we try to forgive if it means getting someone who can turn the Titanic around?

Also? I think Rick Peterson has to be held responsible at some point. His name hasn't been tossed around nearly as much as it should be. When you have a bullpen that is as horrific as this one is, the pitching coach has to take the fall.

The best news is that I am leaving town tomorrow until Monday night. Which means I won't have access to games, and can do everything in my power to avoid ~~low~~highlights.

It could turn out to be a fantastic weekend. After all, ignorance is bliss.

It sucks again!

Wow.... was it just a week ago today that we were enjoying being Mets fans?

How quickly things change.

I have nothing to say, really, because I haven't seen many games... the West Coast trip was a blessing in disguise; because they played so late I wasn't able to stay up and watch the spiraling out of control firsthand.

They are completely incapable of coming back to win when they go down, we knew that. But now they are showing that they are also incapable of holding leads. Not a good combination.

I'm going to the Thursday afternoon game; it will be the first game ever for my sister-in-law and nephew, and I'm already practicing "being excited" so they can enjoy it (they don't really know enough about it yet to realize just how much this all sucks).

The one good thing about all this? The collapse is happening in June, and not the last week of September, so at least we won't have our hopes way up high only to have them shattered into a million pieces. We have a few months to accept it.

Isn't it enjoyable watching games these days?

And to have that feeling that even if they fall behind by a run or two, they aren't going to give up?

They are going to battle back and someone (usually by the name of Fernando Tatis) will make it all better again?

Maybe I shouldn't say anything... Maybe it's like a no-no and I shouldn't be discussing it because I will jinx it.

But it just makes me so happy to see it.

This? Is how they should have been playing for the past year.

It would be great if this continues.... and it needs to because Philly is off the damn hook this year. They are so not joking around. And if we thought they kicked our collective asses last year? Pfft. They will blow us out of the water this year unless we can continue to hold it together and play up to our potential.

And when I say "our" potential, I mean the slackers who've been collecting paychecks for doing not-a-damn-thing since last summer. The ones who are just now deciding to wake up and earn their money.

Yeah, them.

I will take full responsibility for the loss tonight.

After all, I was at the game. And I'm not sure I can even remember the last time they won when I was there. I think it was that Friday night game in April when Figgy pitched his first gem. Remember? *** Edited to add: That's not accurate; they won a couple weeks ago when my friend Cindy hooked us UP with great seats 4 rows behind home plate. Perhaps I can still go to games.... I just need to sit there every time

Anyway, in the back of my mind I thought this might happen. But then there was the other part of me that was thinking "No! They really did turn the corner. They are on a roll and not even your presence will change that!"

Stupid me.

We were in the Mezzanine, way over by the bullpen, so I watched Aaron Heilman warm up. And based on recent activity, I wasn't even that worried. I was trying to stay positive. Up until then, it had been a good game. When they scored that 5th run, I said to Ryan "Oh, this is going to be great. The bullpen will hold it till the 9th, Wagner will come out and save it, and these people are gonna go nuts!" Well, I was half right.

As Heilman was leaving the bullpen, someone yelled down to him "Don't fuck this up for us Heilman!" and it made me mad. I was trying my new positive approach and didn't want anyone messing with my vibe. I had been yelling encouraging things to him, and I'm pretty sure that it was the asshole's words that stuck in Aaron's head and screwed him up.

Either that, or he just plain sucks.

Because that? Was awful to watch. So awful, in fact, that we left. Ryan wasn't feeling well (not from the game; a sore throat) and he starts training at ESPN Zone on Tuesday morning, so he really can't get sick. By the time we got to the car, Schoeneweis had made sure those other two runs scored. Yay.

I think there were some questionable moves (or non-moves) tonight: When Willie came running out of the dugout to argue the call at first, was that really why he came out? Or was he coming out anyway to make a double switch and figured "hell, I'm out here, may as well argue." And if he was putting Chavez into LF anyway, why didn't he bat him for Evans the previous inning when the bases were loaded and they oh-so-needed some runs? And how long did he want to keep Heilman in? He should have been pulled after giving up the tying run. Period. Anyone know where Dirty was tonight? What's up with the bbq out behind the bullpen? That was the most interesting part of the end of the game.... watching them grill up the steaks and crab legs and then wheel them into the bullpen. Is this normal?

Don't worry, I'm not going to a game again until June 12, when I will be joined by my almost-2-year-old nephew for his first Mets game. They best make a good showing that day; I don't want Ben turned off by this nonsense.
